  • Receipt of three (3) vehicles out of fifteen (15) expected; 1 800 motorbikes from the central Government are also expected to reinforce response operations.
  • Guided visit organised with the National Director of the PNHF at Bunia airport with a view to improving the surveillance and control circuit.

  • Geographic extension of the epidemic with six (6) new health zones affected in Ituri province.

I. CONTEXT

Ituri province is located in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and shares a long border with Uganda and South Sudan. For more than two decades, it has faced a chronic humanitarian crisis linked to armed conflicts and recurrent population displacements. It has an estimated population of over 8 million inhabitants, including over one million internally displaced persons. In septembre 2018, this province was affected by an epidemic of Ebola virus disease that was raging in the neighbouring province of Nord-Kivu.

The Mongbwalu health zone is one of the 36 health zones of Ituri province. Considered the starting point of the epidemic, it is located in the territory of Djugu where several armed groups operate. It is located 70 km from Bunia, capital of Ituri province, with frequent population movements towards Uganda. This locality has the particularity of having several work sites that attract populations coming from other territories of the province and neighbouring provinces.

[FIGURE: Daily evolution of confirmed cases]

After a few sporadic cases observed in late avril and early mai, a progressive then rapid increase in confirmed MVE (MVE — Ebola virus disease) cases is noted during the month of mai 2026, with a peak observed around 17–18 mai. A slight decrease in notifications is observed at the end of the period, although transmission remains active.

[FIGURE: Confirmed cases by age group and sex]

The 20 to 49 age group is the most affected with a predominance of the male sex. The extreme age groups (0–9 years and ≥70 years) remain the least affected.

  • Weakness of Contact Tracing and Training Deficit of Actors
  • Persistence of gaps in the identification and rigorous monitoring of contact cases at the level of active and high-risk health zones.
  • Shortage in isolation facilities: Total absence of essential medicines at the Ebola Treatment Centre (CTE) and in the isolation unit of Rwampara and Nyankunde.
  • Lack of supply to referral hospitals: Lack of provision of Generic Essential Medicines (MEG) within the four targeted General Referral Hospitals (HGR), weakening overall patient care.
  • Lack of PCI materials (PPE, hand hygiene, chlorine) in Nord Kivu
  • Low transmission of alerts by zones in the 3 affected Provinces (Ituri, Nord-Kivu and Sud-Kivu);
  • Insufficiency of financial resources to support all response pillars in the affected ZS;
