1. HIGHLIGHTS

• Eighteen (18) new confirmed cases were reported on 03 June 2026. These cases are distributed across the health zones of Bunia (12), Rwampara (4), Damas (1) and Lita (1). • Zero deaths among the 18 new confirmed cases. However, two deaths occurred among previously confirmed patients (1 in Bunia, 1 in Rwampara), bringing the cumulative total of confirmed deaths to 64. • Official discharge of the first recovered MVE case in Goma (Nord-Kivu). The patient was reintegrated into the community in the presence of health authorities and partners. • Security incidents: (1) Attack on EDS teams in Katana (Sud-Kivu) with abandonment of the coffin and manipulation of the body by the community. (2) Popular uprising in Mongbwalu (Ituri) with material damage to two vehicles (MSF and Red Cross). (3) Discovery of two lifeless bodies in Bunia (Salongo neighbourhood) awaiting EDS. • In Nord-Kivu, response activities were paralysed in Beni, Butembo and Oicha following opposition protests and the massacre of approximately 24 civilians in Mbau (ZS (health zone) Oicha), attributed to the presumed ADF. • Deployment of a RADIONE machine (4 modules) and Glove box in the Mongbwalu health zone, as part of the decentralisation of laboratory diagnostics. • Two hundred and thirty-two (232) new contacts listed in 5 ZS: Rwampara (93), Bunia (55), Nyankunde (45), Komanda (28) and Aungba (11). • Beginning of the first training session for EDS teams (35 staff) in the Bunia and Rwampara health zones.

2. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

Ituri province, located in north-eastern DRC, shares a long and porous border with Uganda and South Sudan. Its population is estimated at more than 8 million inhabitants, including more than one million internally displaced persons. The Mongbwalu health zone, presumed starting point of the outbreak, is characterised by the presence of armed groups, frequent population movements towards Uganda, and numerous artisanal mining sites attracting migrant workers. The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, was officially declared on 15 May 2026 by the Minister of Public Health. The three affected provinces have a total population estimated at nearly 15 million inhabitants, with massive internal displacement and cross-border flows towards neighbouring countries. Ituri remains the national epicentre with 94,2 % of confirmed cases (359/381). The case fatality rate there is 13,9 % (50/359). Nord-Kivu shows a concerning case fatality rate of 68,4 %, explained by delays in care provision and the escape of confirmed cases from healthcare facilities.

3.4 Epidemic mapping

[FIGURE: Figures 2 & 3. Spatial distribution of confirmed MVE cases by affected health zone and in the three affected provinces as of 02 June 2026]

4. RESPONSE ACTIONS BY PILLAR

4.1 Coordination

• National / Ituri: Strategic coordination meeting chaired by the Governor of Ituri. Debriefing to the Governor by the DG of the INSP (National Institute of Public Health) on the joint mission to Mongbwalu. Continuation of work on developing the consolidated operational plan (CONOPS) and the health zone prioritisation exercise. • Nord-Kivu: Participation in the discharge ceremony of the recovered patient in Goma. Holding of the Incident Management System meeting at the DPS. Monitoring of traveller quarantine. • Sud-Kivu: Meeting with the provincial Governor. Recommendation for direct funding of activities. Holding of the Health Cluster.

4.2 Epidemiological surveillance

Table 2. Management of epidemiological alerts (24h) as of 03 June 2026
Indicator Ituri Nord-Kivu Sud-Kivu Total
Alerts reported 166 * 237 6 409
Alerts investigated (24h) 88 * 216 6 310
Investigation rate (24h) 62 % * 91 % 100 % 75,8 %
Alerts validated 141 45 0 186

*Partial data for Ituri: 154 new alerts out of 166, investigation ongoing for alerts carried over from the previous day.

Table 3. Contact follow-up of confirmed cases as of 03 June 2026
Province Contacts under follow-up (n) Contacts seen (24h) Follow-up rate (%)
Ituri 3 837 2 032 53,0
Nord-Kivu 533 343 64,4
Sud-Kivu 181 150 82,9
Total 4 551 2 525 55,5

Challenges: Persistence of low performance in Ituri (53,0 %) although improving. In Nord-Kivu (64,4 %), significant disparities persist (Goma, Nyiragongo and Oicha at 100 %, Kalunguta at 0 %). The escape of 2 confirmed cases and 17 suspects in Ituri, and of one confirmed case in Sud-Kivu (CTE (Ebola treatment centre) Lwiro), constitutes a major obstacle.

4.3 Laboratory

• Ituri: 82 samples collected and analysed (18 positive, 61 negative, 3 invalid), representing a positivity rate of 22,0 %. No samples pending. Deployment of a RADIONE machine (4 modules) in Mongbwalu for diagnostic decentralisation. • Nord-Kivu: 39 samples collected in 24h. 10 tested in Petit Nord (0 positive). 147 results pending in Grand Nord, average delay > 5 days. Receipt of 100 sample collection kits (swabs) in Beni. • Sud-Kivu: Continuation of the installation of the INRB mobile laboratory in Miti-Murhesa.

• Ituri: Briefing of 20 healthcare providers on donning and doffing PPE (HGR (general referral hospital) Nyankunde). 4 EDS carried out out of 10 alerts in the AS (health area) Sayo. Finishing of works on 3 isolation units (CS Shari, CS Makabo, CS Lengabo in Rwampara ZS). Training of 35 EDS staff. • Nord-Kivu: Average PCI (infection prevention and control) score at 22,9 %. Briefing of 5 providers from CM La Grâce (Grand Nord) and 44 providers in Karisimbi. Stock-out of PCI supplies reported (critical situation). • Sud-Kivu: Scorecard evaluation of 19/35 facilities in 8 ZS. Briefing of 80 people (56 RECO (community health worker), 24 U-REPORT) on standard precautions and donning/doffing PPE.
