1. HIGHLIGHTS

Twenty-six (26) new confirmed cases including 11 deaths, were reported during the day of 14 June 2026 in 2 provinces (Ituri: 21 and Nord-Kivu: 5).

These confirmed cases are distributed in the ZS (health zone) Mongbwalu (11), Nyankunde (4), Bunia (3), Rwampara (3) in the province of Ituri and the ZS Butembo (4) and Katwa (1) for the province of Nord-Kivu.

Eight (8) patients suffering from Ebola virus disease were declared recovered, including 3 in Bunia and 5 in Rwampara (Ituri province).

Holding of a meeting chaired by the Director General of the INSP (National Institute of Public Health) with the response team, in the presence of the new military Governor.

2. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

The province of Ituri, located in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, shares a long and porous border with Uganda and South Sudan.

For more than two decades, it has been facing a chronic humanitarian crisis linked to armed conflicts and recurrent population displacements.

Its population is estimated at more than 8 million inhabitants, including more than one million internally displaced persons.

The Mongbwalu health zone, considered the starting point of the outbreak, is located in the territory of Djugu 70 km from Bunia.

This zone is characterised by the presence of armed groups, frequent population movements towards Uganda, and numerous artisanal mining sites attracting migrant workers.

In September 2018, the province of Ituri had already been affected by the 10th MVE (Ebola virus disease) outbreak that was then raging in Nord-Kivu.

The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, was officially declared on 15 May 2026 by the Minister of Public Health.

The three affected provinces have a total population estimated at nearly 15 million inhabitants, with massive internal displacements and cross-border flows towards neighbouring countries.

3. DETAILED EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

3.1 Spatial distribution and active hotspots as of 14 June 2026

Province Confirmed cases Deaths (confirmed) Case fatality Affected health zones New confirmed cases (24h)

Sud-Kivu 3 1 33,3% 1 out of 34 (2,9 %) 0
Total 808 192 23,8% 31 out of 104 (29,8 %) 26

For the day of 14 June 2026, no new health zone was affected.

The number of affected ZS remains 31/104 (section 3.1).

Approximately 91,3% of confirmed cases reported in the 3 affected provinces are located in the province of Ituri, making it the epicentre.

Furthermore, the province of Nord-Kivu remains the most affected regarding case fatality (56,7%) whilst the province of Ituri shows a low case fatality (20,7%) despite the significant number of deaths recorded.

On the other hand, the province of Sud-Kivu has not notified any confirmed case since 26 May 2026.

An increasing number of confirmed cases is observed from one week to the next, reflecting ongoing transmission of the disease in the community.

A sudden geographical expansion of the outbreak is to be feared if public health actions are not implemented quickly.
