1. HIGHLIGHTS

Twenty-nine (29) new confirmed cases including 4 deaths, were reported in the province of Ituri during the day of 15 June 2026.

These confirmed cases are distributed across the ZS (health zone) Mongbwalu (10), Rwampara (7), Nizi (5), Nyankunde (3), Lita (3), Komanda (1).

One (1) patient (ZS Mongbwalu) suffering from Ebola virus disease was declared cured after obtaining negative control tests.

Attack on the EDS teams in the AS (health area) PLUTO (ZS Mongbwalu).

The EDS was carried out after the intervention of the law enforcement forces.

5 PoE/PoC providers (3 PNHF, 1 ICCN and the Driver) were sequestered by uniformed personnel; the latter accuse them of spreading the disease as response actors.

2. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

The province of Ituri, located in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, shares a long and porous border with Uganda and South Sudan.

For more than two decades, it has been facing a chronic humanitarian crisis linked to armed conflicts and recurrent population displacements.

Its population is estimated at more than 8 million inhabitants, including more than one million internally displaced persons.

The health zone of Mongbwalu, considered as the starting point of the outbreak, is located in the territory of Djugu at 70 km from Bunia.

This zone is characterised by the presence of armed groups, frequent population movements towards Uganda, and numerous artisanal mining sites attracting migrant workers.

In September 2018, the province of Ituri had already been affected by the 10th MVE (Ebola virus disease) outbreak which was then raging in Nord-Kivu.

The current outbreak, due to the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, was officially declared on 15 May 2026 by the Minister of Public Health.

The three affected provinces have a total population estimated at nearly 15 million inhabitants, with massive internal displacements and cross-border flows towards neighbouring countries.

3. DETAILED EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

3.1 Spatial distribution and active hotspots as of 15 June 2026

Table 1. Distribution of confirmed cases and deaths by affected province as of 15 June 2026.
Province Confirmed cases Deaths (confirmed) Case fatality Affected health zones New confirmed cases (24h)
Ituri 767 157 20,5% 20 out of 36 (55,5 %) 29
Nord-Kivu 67 38 56,7% 10 out of 34 (29,4 %) 0
Sud-Kivu 3 1 33,3% 1 out of 34 (2,9 %) 0
Total 837 196 23,4% 31 out of 104 (29,8 %) 29

At the end of the day of 15 June 2026, no new health zone has been affected.

The number of affected ZS remains 31/104 (section 3.1).

Approximately 91,6% of the confirmed cases reported in the 3 affected provinces are from the province of Ituri, making it the epicentre.

Furthermore, the province of Nord-Kivu remains the most affected with regard to case fatality (56,7%) whilst the province of Ituri shows a low case fatality (20,5%) despite the significant number of recorded deaths.

On the other hand, the province of Sud-Kivu has not reported a confirmed case since 26 May 2026 (Table 1)

Province of Sud-Kivu (3 cases) : Miti-Murhesa (3).

3.3 Temporal analysis : A growing number of confirmed cases is observed from one week to the next, reflecting continuous transmission of the disease in the community.

A sudden geographical expansion of the outbreak is to be feared if public health actions are not implemented rapidly.
