1. COORDINATION

1.1. Main Actions

• Monitoring and supporting response actions in all affected provinces.

2. RESPONSE ACTIONS BY PILLAR

1.1.1. Epidemiological surveillance

1.1.2. Main Actions

During the last 24h, 1705 alerts were recorded in the 6 affected provinces, 1 632 (95,7%) were verified.

Thus, 348 alerts were validated as suspected cases.

The latter were all investigated (100 %) and 186 of them were transferred to CT (CT — transit centre)/CTE (Table 3).

The proportion of contacts followed up during the last 24 hours stands at 89,0 % (16 719 seen out of 18 784 to follow), above the 85 % threshold, compared to the previous day (88,0%) ; 100 % in Tshopo (350/350), 90,1% in Nord-Kivu (7 468/8 293), 89,7% in Ituri (7 115/ 7 932), 84,6% in Haut Uélé (1 562/1 846) and 61,7% in Bas Uélé (224/363).

1.1.3. Challenges

Persistence of poor contact tracing around confirmed cases in the province of Bas Uélé, linked to an insufficiency of teams dedicated to these activities.

1.2. Update on points of control and points of entry activities (PoC/PoE)

1.2.1. Main actions

Six (06) live alerts were reported at PoE/PoC during the last 24 hours, of which five were validated and referred: two in Ituri, at the Iga-Barrière PoC (ZS (ZS — health zone) Nizi) and at the Irumu Centre PoC (ZS Nyankunde), both isolated and referred to the Bunia and Nyankunde CTE; four in Nord-Kivu of which three were validated, all referred to dedicated facilities.

1.2.2. Challenges

PoE/PoC operationalisation not optimal and low reporting completeness in Sud-Kivu (55,5 %) and Haut-Uélé (54,5 %) ; In Ituri, 1 (9,09 %) of the 11 strategic PoE/PoC remains functional without interruption: the Avakubi PoC is non-functional for security reasons, the Nzebi, Pont Ituri, Makoko 2 and Foner Mambasa PoC are on strike due to non-payment.

In Haut-Uélé, 4 PoC (Dusu, Apodo, PK10 route Poko and Gossamu) did not report and the Magambe PoC recorded refusals of screening (3 %) and handwashing (13 %).

In Sud-Kivu, absence of isolation mechanisms at the Kavimvira, Kalundu Port SNCC and Baraka PoE remains.

• In Sud-Kivu, no new admission was recorded.

Eight (8) patients are in isolation for 25 beds, representing an overall occupancy rate of 32,0%.

KEY MESSAGES

▪ At the end of this day, sustained performance was observed in epidemiological investigations (100 % of suspected cases investigated) and stability in the daily proportion of contact tracing 89,0% vs 88,0% the previous day.

▪ Continued transmission of MVE, with 64 new confirmed cases including 25 community deaths and 7 intra-CTE recorded over the last 24 hours, bringing the national cumulative total to 6 250 confirmed cases and 3 039 deaths.

▪ Ituri remains the epicentre of the epidemic, concentrating 81,7 % of cumulative confirmed cases and 60,9% of new cases reported over the last 24 hours, followed by the province of Nord-Kivu which displays the highest case fatality rate.

▪ Strengthening priority interventions (surveillance, case management, PCI, logistics and community engagement) remains essential to rapidly interrupt transmission chains.

CHRONOLOGY OF KEY EVENTS

▪ From 24 April to 15 May 2026, the epidemic progressed from the detection of the first suspected cases to the biological confirmation of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, leading to the official declaration of the 17th Ebola Virus Disease epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

▪ Between 17 and 18 May 2026, national authorities, with support from partners, reinforced the response by declaring a public health emergency of national then continental scope, accompanied by the mobilisation of funds.
