1. COORDINATION

1.1. Main Actions

  • Monitoring and accompaniment of response actions in all affected provinces.

2. RESPONSE ACTIONS BY PILLAR

1.1.1. Epidemiological surveillance

1.1.2. Main Actions

During the day of 02 September 2026, 2 610 alerts were recorded in the 6 affected provinces, 2 585 (99,0%) were verified.

Following this exercise, 433 alerts were validated as suspected cases.

The latter were all investigated (100 %) and 240 of them were transferred to the CT (transit centre)/CTE (Table 3).

Regarding contacts followed over the course of the last 24 hours, the proportion stands at 86,5 % (17 910 seen out of 20 711 to follow) less than the day before (89,0%) but remains above the threshold of 85 %; 59,8 % in Tshopo (211/353), 84,9% in Nord-Kivu (7 674/9 034), 89,8% in Ituri (9 310/ 10 371), 80,0% in Haut Uélé (471/589) and 67,0% in Bas Uélé (244/364).

Data from the ZS (health zone) of Wamba (province of Tshopo) were not reported.

1.1.3. Challenges

Persistence of poor contact tracing around confirmed cases in the province of Bas Uélé, linked to an insufficiency of teams dedicated to these activities.

1.2. Update on point of control and point of entry activities (PoC/PoE)

1.2.1. Main actions

Nine (09) live alerts were notified at the different PoE/PoC on the date of 02 September 2026, of which two were validated: one in Ituri, at the PoC of Dele (ZS Rwampara), isolated but having refused transfer to the CTE; one in Haut-Uélé, at the PoC of Magambe (ZS Isiro), intercepted, validated and referred to the CTE.

The three alerts from Nord-Kivu and the four from Bas-Uélé were invalidated.

1.2.2. Challenges

Non-optimal operationalisation of PoE/PoC and poor reporting completeness in Sud-Kivu (55,5 %) and Haut-Uélé (64,0 %) ; In Ituri, 1 (9,09 %) of the 11 strategic PoE/PoC remains functional without interruption: the PoC of Avakubi is non-functional for security reasons, the PoC Nzebi, Frigo, Galay, Pont Ituri, Makoko 2, Mabakese, Bey and Foner Mambasa are on strike due to non-payment.

In Haut-Uélé, 4 PoC (Dusu, Apodo, PK6 route Niangara and Gossamu) did not report and the PoC of Magambe records high refusals of handwashing (12 %).

In Sud-Kivu, the lack of isolation arrangements at the PoE of Kavimvira, Kalundu Port SNCC and Baraka remains.

In Bas-Uélé, the insufficiency of mobility, connectivity and water supply at the PoE/PoC persists

At the end of the day, 56 patients, representing an overall occupancy rate of 46,7% (120 beds).

  • In Tshopo, 3 new admissions were recorded.

Seven (7) patients are in isolation for 25 beds, representing an overall occupancy rate of 28,0%.

1.5.2. Challenges

Low accommodation capacity and saturation: in Ituri, the CTE of Nizi is saturated for suspects; in Nord-Kivu, oversaturation of the CT/CTE (118,6 %), some patients are managed in non-dedicated ESS; in Bas-Uélé, lack of standard-compliant CTE/CT and ambulance; in Tshopo, lack of standard-compliant CTE in Bafwasende and unavailability of blood bags.

1.6. Risk communication and community engagement

1.6.1. Main actions

  • In Ituri, support from CREC for EDS around 52 community deaths in 10 health zones of Ituri notably Nizi, Mongbwalu, Bambu, Fataki, Mangala (Djugu Territory),

Bunia, Komanda, Rwampara (Irumu Territory) Nia-Nia (Mambasa Territory), Tchomia (straddling Djugu and Irumu).

1.9.1. Main actions.

In Ituri, continuation of training on the prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment in the different affected provinces.

1.9.2. Challenges

  • Still insufficient coverage of PSEA activities: 25 % of health zones of Ituri (9/36) are aware of the reporting mechanism; absence of mapping of actors; insufficiency of mass awareness materials; lack of means of transport and IT equipment for the pillar.

KEY MESSAGES

  • Ongoing transmission of MVE, with 92 new confirmed cases including 24 community deaths and 9 intra-CTE recorded over the course of the last 24 hours, bringing the national cumulative total to 6 342 confirmed cases and 3 072 deaths.

  • Maintained performance is observed in epidemiological investigations (100 % of suspected cases investigated) and stability in the daily proportion of contact tracing (86,5%) which remains above the threshold of 85,0%.

  • Ituri remains the epicentre of the epidemic, concentrating 81,4 % of cumulative confirmed cases and 65,2% of new cases reported over the course of the last 24 hours, followed by the province of Nord-Kivu which displays the highest case fatality rate.

  • Strengthening priority interventions (surveillance, case management, PCI, logistics and community engagement) remains essential to rapidly interrupt chains of transmission.

CHRONOLOGY OF KEY EVENTS

  • From 24 April to 15 May 2026, the epidemic progressed from the detection of the first suspected cases to the biological confirmation of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus, leading to the official declaration of the 17th Epidemic of Ebola Virus Disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  • Between 17 and 18 May 2026, the national authorities, with support from partners, strengthened the response through the declaration of a public health emergency of national then continental concern, accompanied by the mobilisation of funds.
